SAN JUAN.- The Public Ministry of this judicial district obtained the maximum sentence, 30 years in prison, against a man who in 2020 murdered his partner, a teacher whose body was found in a black earth mine in the Sabana Alta municipal district.
Judges Angélica María Calderón, Diógenes Dámaso and Luis Manuel Marte, of the Collegiate Court of San Juan de la Maguana, handed down the sentence against Rafael Emilio de los Santos Ramírez, for the death of Ángela Moreta.
They also ordered the confiscation of the firearm he was carrying and his shipment to the local public jail.
In the case against him, the criminal prosecution body also subjected Santos Ramírez for illegally carrying a firearm, with which he shot himself in the chest, after his detention at the Los Calimetes military checkpoint. Elías Piña province, on April 6, 2020, the day her partner was reported missing.
The substantive trial for the death of Ángela Moreta lasted three days, during which 11 witnesses appeared.
The investigative proceedings, the testimonial evidence and the documents shown at the hearing resulted in an exemplary sanction for the crime, which deeply moved all the residents of this province in the southern region of the country.
Represented by prosecutors Francis Amaury Bidó Matos and Danelys Medina, the Public Ministry assigned the case the legal classification of murder and illegal possession and use of a firearm, which constitute violations of articles 295, 296, 297 and 302 of the Penal Code. Professor Ángela Moreta was found dead on April 12 in a black earth mine, on the hill of Bayahondito, in the Sabana Alta municipal district, six days after her relatives reported her disappearance.
The San Juan de la Maguana Prosecutor’s Office recalled that members of the Intelligence Department, G-2, and other members of the Army of the Dominican Republic proceeded with the arrest of De los Santos Ramírez when he was traveling through the aforementioned place in a red truck, Mitsubishi brand, plate No. L004612.
He specified that, once arrested, the man requested to enter the bathroom, a moment he took advantage of to shoot himself with the pistol he was carrying, caliber 9 millimeters No. 290542.
The elements of evidence found near the body, the investigative steps carried out and the attempted suicide of the defendant, as well as his history of violent behavior, guided the investigations towards him and led to his conviction in court.
