Saint Christopher.– Various social organizations in San Cristóbal spoke out this Thursday to demand concrete measures that guarantee the preservation of thes Pomier Caves, a natural and cultural heritage of humanity.
At a press conference held in the Multipurpose Room of the extension of the UASD San Cristobalrepresentatives of civil society demanded that the Dominican State immediately rescind the contracts and permits granted for mining exploitation in the area.
This, after revealing in recent technical studies the negative impact of these operations on the nature reserve.
Proposals and demands
Among the main demands, social groups urged the authorities to adopt the project «Pomier: Prehistoric Capital of the Antilles«, proposed by the Santo Domingo Espeleogroup, as a strategy to convert the area into a model of ecotourism and cultural development.
In addition, they requested the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to implement protection measures for the sources and resources of the Nigua River, currently threatened by harmful and indiscriminate practices.
New platform in defense of heritage
The leaders of the movement announced the creation of the San Cristóbal platform through the Cueva del Pomier and La Tomaa collective space to articulate efforts in defense of this invaluable heritage.
The researcher Domingo Abreu and the activist Manuel Nina (known as Pacholy) participated as main spokespersons, who reiterated that the protection of Pomier Caves It is a cause that transcends local interests and constitutes a national duty.
The signatory organizations indicated that they will continue working in alliance with specialists and citizens to achieve the conservation of this natural monument, an invaluable legacy for present and future generations.
