During the session of the UN Security Council, various countries congratulated the leader of the opposition, María Corina Machado, for having received the Nobel Peace Prize, although Samuel Moncada, Venezuela’s ambassador to the United Nations, did not refer to that award in his speech, later saying: “I hoped they would give her the Nobel Prize in Physics, perhaps next year.”
Samuel Moncada, Venezuela’s ambassador to the United Nations, denounced this Friday, October 10, that the United States has been developing a “propaganda and disinformation campaign” against his country for years and warned that the military deployment in the Caribbean, which Donald Trump’s administration says is to fight drug trafficking, “threatens not only the peace and security of our nation, but of all of Latin America and the Caribbean.”
In that sense, he stated that “there is a murderer roaming in the Caribbean, a murderer who looks for excuses to manufacture a conflict” and highlighted that he seeks “to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro Moros, with the purpose of installing a puppet regime and turning our country into a colony.”
In Moncada’s opinion, US actions indicate that “in the very short term an armed attack against Venezuela will be carried out”; Therefore, he asked the United Nations Security Council “to have the necessary means to prevent the situation from further aggravating.” “We are here to prevent the commission of an international crime,” he reiterated.

The Venezuelan representative accused the Trump administration of “not having contact with reality” and of criminalizing the Venezuelan people. “The truth is that the US government has already issued a secret order to authorize the use of military force abroad with the excuse of a false fight against drug trafficking.”
“Venezuela comes here today to demand that the United States government comply with its international obligations,” Moncada emphasized and reiterated that they are willing to dialogue to overcome any difficulty through diplomatic means.
The Venezuelan ambassador to the UN proposed three specific actions to this organization:
- That the existence of a threat to international peace and security be determined due to the current military escalation of the United States government in the Caribbean.
- That the necessary measures be adopted to prevent the situation on the ground from deteriorating further.
- That a resolution of the Security Council be approved in which all its members, including the United States, commit to respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
Recognition of María Corina Machado
During the United Nations Security Council, requested by Venezuela to address the situation of tension between Washington and Caracas, several of the member countries took advantage of the occasion to congratulate the leader of the opposition, María Corina Machado, for having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
The United Kingdom said that Maduro’s administration is “fraudulent” because the National Electoral Council has not yet published the result of last year’s presidential elections, “which were neither free nor fair.” They also denounced that there are more than 800 political prisoners in the country and asked to “stop” this situation.
“We work to achieve a negotiated transition in Venezuela,” said the representative of that country.
Other countries, although not the United States, also congratulated Machado on his Nobel, as well as calling for a transition in Venezuela to overcome the political and humanitarian crisis.
Samuel Moncada did not refer to these pronouncements, but said with irony, after leaving the session: “I hoped they would give him the Nobel Prize in Physics, perhaps next year.”
