Garcia’s days off come just as Tesla CEO Elon Musk announces that there is no point in investing in Mexico if Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump returns to the White House and imposes heavy tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexico.
“I think we should wait and see what happens in the election. Trump has promised tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexico. If that happens, it would make no sense to make a significant investment in the country,” Musk said.
The statement comes at a time when Tesla had planned to begin construction of its Gigafactory in Sant Catarina, Nuevo León, by 2026. The businessman, who has expressed his support for Trump and plans to contribute a considerable amount to his campaign, added that the company is currently re-evaluating its position on the project.
Construction of the plant, announced in March 2023, had received an initial boost thanks to state incentives offered by the Mexican government. However, the start of work, scheduled for March this year, had already been postponed due to high interest rates, according to Musk.
At the time, the announcement of the construction caused disagreements between the government of Samuel García and that of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
García often boasted about the mega investment that would come to Nuevo León, it was even one of his flags when he sought to be the candidate of the Citizen Movement (MC) for the Presidency of Mexico.
