Samba de terreiro opens the series Saraus Cariocas, in Rio

On the last Thursday of the month, always at 12:30 pm, renowned names of Brazilian music will meet in the Archive’s auditorium to play, sing and have an informal chat with the public.

Each meeting will have as its theme a musical genre linked to Rio de Janeiro.

At the premiere, the star was the samba de terreiro, with musicians Cláudio Jorge and Augusto Martins. Cláudio Jorge is a guitarist and was a partner of singer-songwriter Ismael Silva when he was young, one of the founders of the first Samba School in Brazil, Deixa Falar. Augusto Martins is a singer and composer of Brazilian popular music and joined his friend in a duo that knows interesting details about the history of samba de terreiro.

Other musical genres from Rio de Janeiro, such as jongo, choro, gafieira, will be the theme of the next meetings, during this second semester. Each Sarau Carioca lasts 60 minutes. Admission is free, subject to the capacity of the auditorium of 126 seats, on a first-come, first-served basis. The Soirees will be recorded and will be available later on the YouTube of the General Archive of the City.
