The federal government’s health sector is preparing to make an “important transition” in the acquisition of insulin for the treatment of diabetes starting in 2027-2028, announced the undersecretary of Sectoral Integration and Coordination of Health Care Services of the Ministry of Health, Eduardo Clark. It is intended to move towards insulin glargine, which is patent-free, generic, but of a new generation.
He noted that this is part of a review of diabetes treatments, prioritizing the acquisition of medications that have been determined in the National Health Care Protocols. “We are also making a much more modern portfolio, which will help people have much greater control, not only in insulins, but also in other types of diabetes medications.”
On the other hand, the Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich, stated that it is a myth that a person who is diagnosed with diabetes necessarily has to develop serious complications, such as kidney damage, blindness, amputations or high blood pressure. Today, early detection can allow people to lead a “practically normal” life and delay the effects of this condition with preventive measures.
The secretary said that there are various factors that increase the possibility of contracting diabetes, such as people who have adverse lifestyle conditions, who eat high-calorie diets and ultra-processed foods; chronic stress, because it is accompanied by high levels of hydrocortisone, and that means it can also be a risk factor, and the lack of preventive actions.
If a person has an immediate family member with diabetes, they have two to three times the risk of developing diabetes. And that is why it can be prevented earlier, because just knowing that an immediate family member has diabetes can make the rest of your family preventable. If you have two immediate family members with diabetes mellitus, you have four to six times the risk of developing it.
