Salto Grande Dam: what does the second phase of its renovation imply?

Part of the renovation of the plant will be done by replacing 14 turbines, it is also planned to renew the hydromechanical systems of the landfill, auxiliary mechanical and electrical systems, control systems and the main transformers of the plant.

The renovation of the turbines will be done while the plant is active.

The Uruguayan and Argentine governments will finance the works with different contributionsin addition to having funds from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The second stage of remodeling will be carried out between 2023 and 2029reported Carlos Albisu, president of the Salto Grande Mixed Technical Commission – a bnational organization created by Argentina and Uruguay to “take advantage of the rapids of the Uruguay River in the Salto Grande area,” according to its website.

The renovation of the plant was announced by the government in 2019. The first stage consisted of renewing speed regulators, control systems, spillway and intake gates, and civil infrastructure. The initial investment was US$ 80 million.
