Sales of new vehicles will grow between 1% and 3% this year

As a result of the lower growth that is expected in the economy this year (2.5%), the sale of new ones will not accelerate and would stay in “first gear”. The manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP), Alberto Morisaki, explained that the commercialization of light vehicles will only increase between 1% and 2%.

“Last year we closed with the placement of 159,800 light cars, and by 2023 there are variables that will impact such as the slowdown in consumption,” he assured Peru21.

This slow progress occurs even though the fleet is 14 years old. “For every thousand inhabitants in Peru, five cars are sold, but in Chile there are 19 and in Mexico, eight,” Morisaki said.

In the same way, he explained that the protests have also postponed the purchase decision due to uncertainty. The same happens with companies that were going to acquire heavy-duty vehicles.

TREND

Meanwhile, the commercial director of Honda del Peru, Yoshi Oshiro, pointed out that there is a trend towards the acquisition of SUVs and trucks.

For this reason, within the company’s new releases for this year there are four trucks and only one sedan. Recently they even presented the CR-V in the Peruvian market, which is the best-selling SUV in the world.

One of the reasons why people prefer these types of vehicles, he explained, is that they are competitively priced, and even, in some cases, similar to smaller cars. Also, people are now looking for a car that will give them comfort on country tracks that are often bumpy and spring-breaking.

The Honda representative explained that security and connectivity for cell phones are also valued more in the country, as well as engines that have more power, but use less fuel.

DATA

In January, 299 electrified vehicles (hybrid and electric) were sold. This meant an increase of 60.8% compared to the same month in 2022.

At the end of 2022, the AAP indicated that they had more than 40 makes and 90 models of these cars available.
