The world is becoming more aware of caring for the environment and this also includes the way we transport ourselves. Therefore, the demand for electric cars It is growing every year and in 2024 around 17 million vehicles of this type will be sold.
Peru is no exception to this growing interest in these cars and, although the penetration of these units is still low, it is growing at considerable rates.
According to the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP), 10,239 electrified vehicles were sold in 2025, a growth of 54% compared to 2024, setting a historical record.
The union’s data reveal that, by technology, it is the conventional hybrids (HEV) that led the commercialization with 8,925 units, that is, an increase of 50.1%. Pure electric vehicles (BEV) registered 780 units sold (79.3% more than in 2024), while plug-in hybrids (PHEV) reached 534 vehicles placed (an increase of 101.5%).
The manager of Economic Studies of the AAP, Alberto Morisaki, stated that the advances reflect that people are being more aware of using sustainable transportation.
“The savings in the use of hybrids is brutal and that is something that people are realizing, and that is why the demand for these cars increases,” he commented.
The fall of the dollar of approximately 10% last year also boosted the sale of these vehicles, as well as economic growth and inflation that were within the target range (between 1% and 3%) of the Central Reserve Bank.
ACCELERATED ENGINES
The good results would not be exclusive to 2025. Alberto Morisaki pointed out that for this year a growth of between 40% and 50% is expected, with which the sale of 15,000 units is expected in 2026.
Thus, not even general elections would affect the progress of a dynamic sector. “Until now, it has not been seen that a candidate goes to the second round who goes against private investment and, therefore, against these sectors,” added Alberto Morisaki.
In addition, he pointed out that at the moment there is no economic uncertainty or other risks that could play against this item.
However, the AAP representative indicated that, despite the good results and expectations for this year, the penetration of these vehicles is still low when compared to other countries in the region. For example, last year in Colombia 87,677 units were sold.
“Penetration in Peru was only 4.8% in 2025, while in Colombia it was 35%. Ecuador, which is smaller than us, which has fewer resources, sells double what we sell,” he added.
For this reason, he assured that it is necessary to provide tax and non-tax incentives for the entry of more brands and models, and to promote the placement of charging stations.
It should be noted that there are currently bills in Congress that aim to promote electromobility and energy savings. There is even an opinion in the Economy Commission for a law that promotes and develops “green transportation”, which proposes, among other things, the exemption of vehicle tax.
“There could also be exclusive parking for those who use these cars, discounts on insurance; in short, a series of incentives,” Morisaki highlighted.
