Sales in supermarkets fell 0.6% while in shopping malls they grew 284%

INDEC data reflect increases in consumption.

Sales in supermarkets in May marked a slight decline of 0.6% compared to the same month in 2021, while in large shopping centers they marked a strong increase of 284%, the National Institute of Statistics and Census reported on Tuesday ( Indec).

For their part, the wholesale self-services registered a reduction of 0.3% year-on-year in May in the measurement at constant prices.

In this way, in the first five months of the year, sales in supermarkets accumulated an increase of 2.6%, in shopping malls the improvement was 62.9% and in wholesale self-services 4.6% compared to the same period of 2021.

In the large shopping centers, total sales at current prices in May, compared to those of the same month of the previous year, reflected that the items with the highest increase were: “Fun and recreation”, 2,940.8%; “Clothing, footwear and leather goods”, 710.5%; “Toy shop”, 671.9%; and “Bookstore and stationery”, 525.4%against year-on-year inflation of 60.7%, according to Indec.

In the supermarkets, meanwhile, 37.9% of sales were paid with credit cards; 27.8% with debit cards; 29.4% in cash and the remaining 5% through “other means”.
