A team made up of three volunteer sailors from the Scout Movement have been sailing, since yesterday (10th), along the Brazilian coast on a journey that started in Natal and ended in Porto de Paranaguá, in the state of Paraná. This is the first expedition with a 51-foot sailboat seized by the Federal Police in 2021. A judicial negotiation involving the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and the Brazilian Navy sealed the donation of the vessel to the Scouts of Brazil.
Navigation along the country’s coast, passing through several states, was made possible after the transfer of the sailboat received approval from the Federal Court. It is an unprecedented expedition for the Brazilian Scouts. The journey will depend on the weather and can take up to 30 days. Stops are planned where local scouts can visit the vessel.
The Scout Movement is an educational movement existing in the world since the beginning of the last century that encourages the development and proactivity of children, adolescents and young people. Through attractive activities, values such as fraternity, justice and concern for the environment are cultivated.
The non-profit association Escoteiros do Brasil was founded in 1924 to promote this movement in the country. According to a report presented in 2020, the entity has more than 79,000 members and is present in almost 700 Brazilian municipalities.
According to the Scouts of Brazil, the transfer of the vessel, for the time being, is provisional, but it should become definitive. The entity intends to use it in a long-term project that aims to offer children, teenagers and young people the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about the maritime world on a school sailboat.
Named for Lamia, the sailboat was intercepted and seized in September 2021 for transporting illicit substances near the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, in Pernambuco. At the time, two foreign crew members were arrested in flagrante delicto.
