Next year the rehabilitation works of the East Pan-American race should begin, as announced by the Minister of Public Works Rafael Sabonge, noting that with this project will improve logistics connectivity in the area and boost the economic development of Panama.
Although he did not specify when, he said that it will depend on the bidding processes so that there is a precise date for the start of these works.
Sabonge recalled that this project, which is carried out in the form of Associations Public-Private (APP), is in the prequalification stage and while this process is being achieved, maintenance is being given to them as patches, “it is not what we want, that is why we are looking for long-term projects,” he said.
And he assured that this type of financing of long-term maintenance projects ensures that the main highways of the country are in an optimal condition in the long term.
“These are projects that have two-year rehabilitation contracts plus 13 maintenance,” he added.
The structuring of the Eastern Pan-American Highway project includes three sections: the first section covers Las Garzas-Cañita (46 km), the second section Cañita-Agua Fría (98.2 km), this being the one with the greatest intervention, and the third section Cold Water-Yaviza (102 km). It will have an initial recovery and/or rehabilitation phase, lasting between one and two years, and a maintenance phase whose duration is estimated to be between 10 years depending on the section and its technical conditions.
