The defense of Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab will appeal the ruling of United States federal judge (USA) Robert Scola, who disregarded Saab’s diplomatic immunity.
In a statement, which circulates through social networks and which has the signature of Saab’s lawyer, David Rivkin; It is noted that the necessary evidence was presented to support that Saab had diplomatic immunity at the time of his arrest.
“We have presented convincing and irrefutable factual evidence that proves his condition,” says the text that was released on social networks.
In the same way, they emphasize that, as a Venezuelan diplomat, he served as head of mission, therefore he has the full right to diplomatic immunity according to the statutes of the Vienna Convention.
“In view of these facts, and by virtue of existing binding legal precedents, your right to diplomatic immunity is legally binding,” they detail.
They stated that they were disappointed by the court’s decision, which is why they will take the decision to appeal.
“We are disappointed that the District Court has reached a contrary conclusion, and we intend to immediately pursue our appeal,” he stresses.
It should be remembered that Saab was on a trip as a special envoy of the Government of Venezuela to Iran, with the rank of diplomat, when in 2020 he was arrested in Cape Verde, at the request of the United States.
