Ruth Luque on “state honours” awarded by Boluarte to Fujimori: “Both seek to erase what happened”

Congresswoman from the left-wing party Together for Peru, Ruth Luquewas shown from the beginning against national mourning decreed by the government of Dina Boluarte. “A regime responsible for 50 deaths pays ‘honour’ to another regime that also killed and violated human rights. Both seek to erase what happened. Silence is the least we should do, in the face of so much shamelessness and infamy.” He added that “a real democracy does not honour those who destroyed democracy and used the State as spoils.”

What are Alberto Fujimori’s crimes?

  • Human Rights Violations:
  1. Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres (2009):Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his responsibility in the massacres of 15 people in Barrios Altos (1991) and 9 people in La Cantuta (1992), committed by the Colina Group, a covert military squad created to combat terrorism, but which carried out extrajudicial executions. These actions were considered crimes against humanity.
  • Kidnappings:
  1. Fujimori was found guilty of the kidnappings of journalist Gustavo Gorriti and businessman Samuel Dyer during the 1992 coup, when he dissolved Congress and acquired dictatorial powers.
  • Corruption:
  1. Embezzlement:Fujimori was convicted of diverting public funds to the National Intelligence Service (SIN), headed by his adviser Vladimiro Montesinos, for illegal purposes.
  2. Media Buying (2000):He was convicted of using public funds to bribe media outlets and politicians in order to secure his re-election and control the public narrative.
  3. Bribes to congressmen:He was convicted of buying the loyalties of opposition congressmen to guarantee his majority in Congress and thus maintain power.
  • Violation of the Constitution:
  1. Fujimori was found guilty of his role in the 1992 self-coup, when he dissolved Congress and suspended the Constitution. This was considered a coup against the democratic order and the rule of law in Peru.
  • Pativilca case (pending sentencing):Fujimori has been charged in connection with the murder of six peasants in Pativilca in 1992, also linked to the actions of the Colina Group. Although he received a pardon in 2017 on humanitarian grounds, this was revoked in 2018, and a final judicial decision on this case is awaited.
