Moscow, Jan 18 (EFE).- Russian authorities reported today that a Russian soldier who defected from a military base involved in the Russian military campaign in Ukraine was shot dead during an attempted arrest in the Lipetsk region, almost 500 kilometers south of Moscow.
“Dmitri Perov, wanted for abandoning his military unit without permission, was detected and liquidated,” the Lipetsk government reported on its Telegram channel, without giving further details of what happened.
According to local authorities, “the situation is under the control of the police. There are no threats to the population.”
The Lipetsk government noted that preliminary investigations are currently underway.
Russian police previously reported that the 31-year-old Perov left the military unit on January 13, taking with him an automatic rifle and five magazines.
According to law enforcement officers, two days later the fugitive visited his mother, who resides in the Russian city of Voronezh.
The Russian media Mash published a security video on its Telegram channel in which the soldier with a backpack is seen boarding a bus.
“During his detention in the Lipetsk region, he resisted and was killed by special troops at approximately 10:40 a.m.” local time (07:40 GMT), the newspaper said. EFE
