The Russian invasion of Ukraine “endangers the lives of numerous innocents” and poses a “risk to peace” in Europe, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz estimated on Thursday.
“The president of Russia violates once again and in a flagrant way international law,” Scholz denounced in a statement to the press, in which he indicated that “he has no justification.”
“It is Putin’s war,” said the German leader who called the deputies to an extraordinary session on Sunday.
A few hours after Russia launched an offensive, Scholz accused it of bringing “suffering and destruction to its neighbors” and claimed that it is “violating Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders, endangering the lives of numerous innocent people in Ukraine.”
“Ultimately, it is putting peace on our continent at risk,” said Angel Merkel’s successor.
Scholz added that as president of the G7 he will address his peers to forge a “reaction that is uniform and clear” and promised that there will be “severe new sanctions” against Moscow.
“We are going to see that Putin made a serious mistake with this war,” he declared, calling on Russia to “immediately stop the military attack and bloodbath.”
