The ambassador of the Russian Federation in Uruguay, Andrey Budaev, criticized Antel’s decision to remove the signal of the Russian channel RT (RussiaToday), and assured that he was “very surprised” when he was notified.

“Respecting the Uruguayan laws and decisions of its authorities, we have no choice but to comply with them, but I wonder: What would be this signal for the UNESCO conference on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day that is planned in Punta del Este at the beginning of May?”, said the diplomatic representative of the government of Vladimir Putin.

The conference to which Budaev refers has the motto “Watched journalism” and, as explained on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, it will have 3,000 guests from all over the world. “It’s a great honor for the country” to host them, Education and Culture Minister Pablo da Silveira said last January when he announced the event.

Freedom of the press

The annual UNESCO forum commemorates World Press Freedom Day and will bring together politicians, journalists, media representatives and legal experts from around the world, among other specialists.

Da Silveira indicated that holding this event in Uruguay is a great honor and an excellent opportunity due to its standing out in the world and the possibility it offers of accessing the knowledge of very valuable specialists on issues related to the principles of freedom of expression and its conciliation with new technologies and social networks.
