Russia welcomes Nicaragua's "international support" and reiterates military cooperation

The Daniel Ortega regime together with its ally Russian Federation celebrated another year of “friendship” between the two nations. Through an interparliamentary videoconference, they took the opportunity to reiterate that they will continue to strengthen cooperation on “military and cybersecurity” issues.

The activity that they have been carrying out for seven years included the participation of the sanctioned Gustavo Porras, president of the National Assembly; and Laureano Ortega, son of the dictatorial couple; who were at the meeting with the President of the Russian Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko, who during her speech stressed that “the political dialogue is being developed and strengthened between the two nations, in which joint efforts are made to deepen and diversify cooperation in many spheres in the economic, social, commercial, cultural, humanitarian, scientific and technical, military and cybersecurity areas”.

Vladimir Putin’s representative considered it “important that we update our relations and coordinate our steps on various issues of regional and global importance.” Likewise, she stressed that the alliance with the Nicaraguan regime has been fundamental for “the establishment of a polycentric and equitable world order and against foreign interference in the affairs of sovereign States.”

Nicaraguan regime continues to strengthen “friendship” with Russia.

Russia also appreciated “the effective support provided by our Nicaraguan friends on genuine issues that are sensitive to us. Crises in international relations make interparliamentary communication especially important.”

Recently, the Latin American studies researcher at the Institute for Strategic Studies of the United States Army War College, Evan Ellis, assured in an interview with Esta Semana that Ortega’s closeness to Russia is an “escape” method in the face of international isolation. imposed by the North American country and the European Union.

“I believe that Ortega’s objective is to escape isolation due to the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union and to show that he still has friends in other parts of the world because Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo are already very isolated,” Ellis said.

Russia is an old ally of Nicaragua that during the first Sandinista regime (1979-1990) provided Soviet weapons to the Nicaraguan Armed Forces. This celebration between both allies was established by the Sandinista dictatorship on December 12 as Friendship Day in commemoration of the day that diplomatic relations were reestablished.

Nicaragua is one of the few countries, along with Venezuela and the small island states of Nauru and Tuvalu, that have joined Russia in recognizing the independence of the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and that has received senior Russian officials since Moscow invaded Ukraine.
