The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, María Zajárova, denounced that the actions of the United States in the Caribbean constitute a “legal chaos” contrary to international law that directly threatens the global legal order.
According to the diplomat, Washington has increased the military presence around Venezuela and implemented a de facto naval blockade.
Faced with this scenario, the official expressed: “we reaffirm our support for the efforts of the Government of Nicolás Maduro to protect its sovereignty and national interests and maintain the stable and safe development of its country.”
Zajárova affirmed that the US actions violate the UN Charter and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. These actions, she noted, affect the freedom of navigation and sovereignty of the South American country.
“We are witnessing the reestablishment of piracy practices, assaults and appropriation of other people’s property in international waters,” the spokesperson stated.
Moscow maintains a position in favor of détente, diplomatic channels and regional stability; However, he warned that a military escalation would affect all of Latin America.
Finally, the Russian Government expressed its hope that Donald Trump will opt for a legal solution before generating a major conflict.
“It is important to prevent a destructive scenario. We trust that the pragmatism of the American president will allow solutions to be found within the framework of international law,” he said.
