Russia puts new military satellite into orbit

The Kremlin put a military satellite into orbit around the Earth using the new Angara 1.2 rocket.

The launch took place last Saturday at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the city of Mirny, in the north-western region of the Arkhangelsk Oblast.

According to a Russian Defense Ministry statement, a space “combat team” launched the implement. It is probably a military satellite radar system to be used in the war against Ukraine.

«From the State Test Cosmodrome of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (Plesetsk Cosmodrome) in the Arkhangelsk region, the combat crew of the Space Forces of the Aerospace Forces [VKS] successfully launched an Angara-1.2 light-class launch vehicle with a spacecraft in the interests of the Russian Defense Ministry,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“The launch of the carrier rocket and the launch of the spacecraft to the calculated orbit were carried out in the normal mode,” they added.

Last December, Russia launched its largest rocket since the fall of the Soviet Union 30 years ago: the 210-foot Angara A-5.
