Russian courts heard 49 cases in 2022 for refusal to delete prohibited information on the Internet and imposed fines of 259.3 million dollars, according to statistics published by the Legal Department of the Russian Supreme Court this Sunday (04.23.2023).

Among the companies most fined is the computer giant Google, owner of YouTube, against which 18 processes were opened.

In addition, fines were imposed against Meta, classified as an extremist in Russia for allowing hateful posts against this country after the start of the Russian campaign in Ukraine, and other resources such as Wikipedia, Twitter and Twitch.

According to Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communications regulator, Google, Facebook and Twitter refuse to remove some 5,500 materials with information banned in Russia.

Russia approved in December 2020 a law that establishes administrative responsibilities against companies that publish prohibited information, such as child pornography, instructions on the manufacture of explosives, calls for opposition protests and others. (ef)
