MADRID, Spain.- In an international panorama marked by discontent and allegations of electoral fraud, Nicolás Maduro has received congratulations from great powers such as Russia and China for his recent “victory” in the electionsas well as similar dictatorial governments in Latin America, such as those of Nicaragua and Cuba.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in congratulating his Venezuelan counterpart, stressed that Maduro’s victory would favor “the constant development” of relations between Moscow and Caracas.
In a Kremlin statement, cited by EFEPutin said: “I am convinced that your activities as head of state will continue to contribute to its progressive development in all areas.”
“This fully responds to the interests of our friendly peoples and is in line with the construction of a more just and democratic world order,” declared the president, accused of crimes against humanity for his invasion of Ukraine.
For its part, China also expressed its support for Maduro. At a press conference, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed the friendship and support between the two countries. According to the Cuban official media, Latin PressLin recalled the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Venezuela, and stressed the importance Beijing attaches to developing its ties with Caracas.
“China is willing to work with Venezuela to continuously enrich the content of the all-weather and all-proof comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries,” the official said.
In addition, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign MinistryNaser Kananí, on his X account expressed: “We congratulate the people and government of Venezuela for the successful holding of the presidential elections in this country, as well as the elected president of the Venezuelan people.”
Meanwhile, Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo, They also congratulated Nicolás Maduro before his third consecutive term.
In a letter sent by Ortega and Murillo, the Nicaraguan leaders referred to the electoral “result” as “a great victory.”
“Dear comrade and brother Nicolás: In full revolutionary and evolutionary brotherhood, from this blessed and always free Nicaragua, our usual embrace, saluting the great victory that this heroic people delivers to the eternal commander Hugo Chávez, on his birthday,” reads the document.
Bolivian President Luis Arce also joined in the congratulations, saying Maduro’s victory was a “great way” to remember Hugo Chavez on his birthday.
“Our special congratulations and democratic, socialist and revolutionary greeting to President Nicolás Maduro and the brave people of Venezuela for their unquestionable victory, which reaffirms their sovereignty and the historical legacy of Commander Chávez,” said the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, in X.
Cuban dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel was among the first allies of the Venezuelan regime to congratulate Maduro. “Today the dignity and courage of the Venezuelan people triumphed over pressures and manipulations,” Diaz-Canel tweeted.
These displays of support come in a context of growing questioning of the legitimacy of the electoral process in Venezuela and of worldwide denunciation for flouting the demands of the Venezuelan people, as well as demands for a transparent recount.
In the early hours of Monday, July 29, the National Electoral Council of Venezuela (CNE) confirmed that Nicolás Maduro had won the elections with 51.2% of the votes. The opposition candidate Edmundo González had obtained 44.2%, according to the electoral institution controlled by Chavismo.
