The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that any decision by the US Justice Department regarding President Nicolás Maduro lacks legality.
“In accordance with the norms of international law recognized by all and based on the principle of the sovereign equality of States, Nicolás Maduro as head of State enjoys absolute immunity from the jurisdiction of the United States and any other State,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, María Zajárova, at a press conference.
Zajárova stressed that “even leaving aside the issue of the illegal use of force” in Venezuela, the mere fact of Maduro’s “kidnapping and detention” seriously violates the international legal obligations of the United States.
In that sense, he pointed out that “any judicial decision would be equally illegal unless a US court remembers international law and orders the release (of Maduro).”
For his part, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, welcomed the day before the policy of the president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, in defending the country’s sovereignty after the “illegal operation” of the United States, which ended in the kidnapping of the head of state, Nicolás Maduro and the first combatant Cilia Flores.
Since last day 3, Russia has criticized Maduro’s kidnapping on several occasions and has demanded his release.
At the same time, Russian authorities, including President Vladimir Putin, have avoided directly attacking United States President Donald Trump for ordering Maduro’s kidnapping.
