The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo will sign an agreement with the Russian Federation on cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy in Nicaragua, with the aim of incorporating nuclear technology in the agriculture and medicine sectors in the country.
Through the presidential agreement 151-2022published this Friday, October 21, in La Gaceta, Official Gazette, Ortega authorized the Nicaraguan ambassador to Russia, Alba Azucena Torres Mejía, to “in the name and on behalf of the government of the Republic of Nicaragua” sign the agreement between Moscow and Managua.
Russia and Nicaragua had the first rapprochement in terms of atomic energy development in December 2021, on that date, both countries signed a “memorandum of understanding between the Rosatom state nuclear corporation and the Nicaraguan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

The document reveals that Putin and Ortega will “cooperate” in the use of energy for peaceful purposes. To date, the details of said cooperation are unknown.
This memorandum was also signed by Ortega’s designee in Russia and the deputy director general of the Russian entity, Nikolai Spassky.
In August 2022, Daniel Ortega ordered through a decree the creation of the “Nicaraguan Commission for the Development of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes.”
The decree specifies that this commission seeks to “promote the development and use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes,” which will be focused on areas such as agriculture, medicine, industry, science, technology, and environmental monitoring.
In addition, on September 14, the son of the presidential couple, Laureano Ortega Murillo, met with a special delegation from the Russian government to address the development of “atomic energy, for peaceful purposes” in Nicaragua, according to official media.
The Russian ambassador to Nicaragua, Alexander Khokhólikov, and a delegation from the State Corporation «Rosatom», that brings together more than 350 nuclear companies around the world and that its purpose is also focused on the control of the development of nuclear weapons, according to the description on its website.
The Ortega regime has declared that it is a faithful ally of the government of Vladimir Putin, and in recent years it has strengthened its relationship with the Russian Federation.
