Ruben Dario’s first visit to Cuba

MADRID, Spain.- The writer, journalist, poet and Nicaraguan diplomat Rubén Darío (1867-1916), representative of literary Modernism in the Spanish language, arrived in Cuba for the first time on July 27, 1892.

The man who was called the prince of Castilian letters arrived at the port of Havana on the steamer Mexico in transit to Spain, where he would represent his country in the festivities for the fourth centenary of the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the American continent.

The editorial staff of the periodical publication The Figaro He offered a banquet attended by, among other personalities of the island’s culture, Julián del Casal and Enrique Hernández Miyares. He also participated in walks, gatherings and entertainments.

He would continue his journey towards the Iberian Peninsula on the afternoon of July 30. But in a few months he would return to the Island: on December 5, returning from Spain on the Alfonso XIII steamer, he would make his second stop in Havana, although only for a few hours, but he left unpublished texts in The Figaro.

A year later Rubén Darío was introduced to Jose Marti in New York. And on September 2, 1910, he passed through Cuba again, a brief stay during which he visited the patriot and diplomat Manuel Sanguily, met the journalist Manuel Márquez Sterling and was offered a banquet at the Hotel Inglaterra.

He left Havana for Mexico on the steamship Champagne. However, days later he was back on the island, where he remained until November, when he returned to Europe on a German ship.
