Rosario Murillo: the final assault on power and her dream of being "president"; constitutional reforms consolidate their "marriage dictatorship"

When the Sandinista deputies return from the Christmas and New Year parliamentary recess, in January 2025, one of their first actions will be to approve, in the second term, the reforms to the Political Constitution of Nicaragua and with it, finally, the current vice president Rosario Murillo will see her dream of being president of Nicaragua fulfilled.

Rosario Murillo, the same one whom her critics accuse of betraying her own daughter Zoilamérica Ortega Murillo for power, the one whom the recently deceased retired army general Humberto Ortega described as incapable of controlling power after the physical disappearance of Daniel Ortega , will not wait for the death of her husband to be president because, taking every precaution, the Ortega-Murillo couple advanced the succession. They do it while the dictator is alive.

This Wednesday, November 20, Rosario Murillo herself announced, during her daily monologue through her official propaganda media, that they are proceeding to reform the constitution to “update” it to the new times, which she called, “times of revolution.” , but she did not say that it is actually about the implementation of the dynastic succession in which she becomes president along with her husband.

For political scientist and opposition leader Félix Maradiaga, the constitutional reforms definitely represent “a ruthless attack against democracy.”

The analyst banished by the dictatorship maintains that the constitutional reform not only represents a totalitarian consolidation of power in the hands of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, who become, constitutionally, absolute owners of the country, “but it formalizes on paper the systematic “human rights violations and abuses that the dictatorship has been committing for years.”

Advance succession

In this context, Ortega, already warned by several analysts that, once he is dead, Murillo and his children will not be able to control power and that the Nicaraguan Army could take over the government to call elections, they decided to take the step before he disappears. physically the Sandinista leader, analysts say, and that is why the reforms even directly subordinate the Army to Rosario Murillo.

But also, according to Maradiaga, to give a sense of protection to the new system of totalitarian government with Murillo as “co-president,” the reform reaffirms “the geopolitical position of the Sandinista regime as an adversary of Western democracies, particularly the United States, shamelessly aligning itself with with authoritarian regimes such as those of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Murillo is accused of having betrayed her daughter Zoilamérica Ortega Murillo due to her excessive desire for power.

Rosario María Murillo Zambrana, 73, has been identified as a woman obsessive with political power, to the point that her critics blame her for having betrayed her own daughter Zoilamérica Ortega Murillo and siding with Daniel Ortega when the eldest of her children accused him of sexual abuse.

Murilo Zambrana stayed next to his romantic partner and turned his back on his daughter. After that episode, she became Ortega’s political shadow. She assumed control of the organizational secretariat of the Sandinista Front, the campaign leadership and purged all the historical cadres of Sandinismo who were close to her husband.

Once they became President in 2007, Murillo assumed de facto full control of the party and the government spokesperson, along with the coordination of the Citizen Power Councils (CPC), from where he assumed command of part of the state apparatus.

But in 2016 she began her definitive assault on political power in Nicaragua with her registration as a candidate for vice presidency with her husband. The elections of that year were awarded, in the midst of a process plagued by questions about fraud, and thus Murillo became second in command of the Government.

Ortega had already announced the co-presidency

In the 2021 presidential votes, Murillo repeated as vice president thanks to electoral fraud, but in 2023, the tyrant Ortega gave the first news of what was to come, naming his wife “co-president.”

On February 9 of last year, when Ortega announced the release and denationalization of 222 political prisoners, when referring to his wife he said that “here is comrade Rosario Murillo, co-president of the Republic. “That’s really how it is: She is co-president of the Republic!” the dictator insisted in a speech broadcast on the national network. “In the Constitution we will have to make some reforms,” Ortega reiterated, looking at his wife who smiled at him, appearing to have a modesty that has never been known before.

Everything was consummated this November 20. Rosario Murillo’s dream has come true: she will be president of Nicaragua, without having to go to elections, sharing the position with her husband.
