“The night will not be eternal,” said the opponent when thanking her for the meeting with the United States Undersecretary of State.

MADRID, Spain.- The United States Deputy Secretary of StateChristopher Landau reported this Tuesday on the social network

“I met today with Rosa María Payá to discuss the unprecedented times we live in, as we witness a historic shift in US policy, Landau wrote in his post. He also highlighted that the US is finally assuming a strong leadership role in stabilizing the region.”

Payá responded in the same thread, thanking the senior official and the US Government for the support “in these crucial moments.”

He also thanked the United States for its decisive actions to promote freedom in Cuba, something key to peace and stability in the region.

“We are willing to work together for a democratic future for Cuba and the Americas,” said the founder of the Cuba Decide organization and one of the most visible figures of the Cuban opposition in exile.

Payá ended his publication with the phrase “The night will not be eternal”, which gives the title to his father’s book, also an opponent and leader of the Christian Liberation Movement, Oswaldo Payá, who died in 2012 in a traffic accident orchestrated by the Cuban regime.

Last June, Rosa María Payá was elected as a new member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), during the 55th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), held in Antigua and Barbuda. His election came after a vote to fill three of the body’s seven seats.

During that Assembly, Christopher Landau, then appointed by President Donald Trump as undersecretary of state, intervened publicly to support his candidacy. In his speech before the vote, he urged member countries to support it and stressed that the IACHR should prioritize “the most serious and pressing human rights abuses and violations, especially where domestic remedies are not available.”

“Rosa María Payá is a principled defender of both democracy and human rights. Her moral clarity, principled conviction and lived experience make her an ideal voice for this organization,” Landau said then, on behalf of the US Government and the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
