Roof of the Monumental stadium in Chile collapses during a training session open to the public

Several fans were injured after the roof of part of the Monumental Stadium in Santiago collapsed on Friday during a training session open to the public organized by the Chilean club Colo Colo.

Images posted on social media showed hundreds of fans on the edge of the grandstand before it gave way under their weight.

Colo Colo lamented the event that occurred in a statement and pointed out that “a group of people respected the minimum standards of behavior by climbing a structure for advertising on which they jumped and caused part of it to give way.”

“Unfortunately, some of those involved were injured and taken to the nearest hospital.”

The club did not specify how many people were injured.

Colo Colo added that they will completely remove the damaged structure to avoid a similar accident in the future.

“We confirm our commitment and willingness to the authorities to continue making all the improvements that are necessary to guarantee the safety of our fans.”

The Colo Colo open training, known as the “Arengazo”, is a club tradition in which fans can cheer on their team inside the stadium before important matches. On Sunday they will face the Catholic University in a derby.

Wednesday’s Cup match between Católica and Universidad de Chile was suspended after the U de Chile goalkeeper was hit by fireworks.
