Romy Chang on Vizcarra’s sentence: “The money route is clearly drawn"

Martín Vizcarra would leave Barbadillo: Inpe evaluates sending it to another penalty

Lawyer Romy Chang spoke after the sentence against the former president Martin Vizcarra and explained that prosecutor Germán Juárez Atoche has done an impeccable job.

“It is a chronicle of a death foretold. It was already seen coming. The testimonies were various, forceful and followed the entire route of the money. It is one of the few cases in which this sequence is well put together. Furthermore, in such a forceful way. From the owner of the company who delivers the bribe to the person who says he gave the money directly to Vizcarra,” he told Peru21 TV.

“This is a blow for Mr. Vizcarra. You should never be happy when a person goes to prison, but it means accepting the consequences of what you did,” he said.

He added that the work of the prosecutor in charge, Germán Juárez Atoche, has been “impeccable.”

“I think the prosecutor has done quite well. He has been very forceful, direct to the point. He has focused on what is important, he has not made the big mega case that ends up making the sentence more complex or delaying and that has allowed us to have a concrete result today, a well-kicked goal that went straight into the goal,” he said.

“All of this is prior to the moment in which he assumed the Presidency of the Republic. It must be specified that his brother is still in the race, no one can take that away. Some specialists have pointed out that Vizcarra does not have much capacity to endorse his brother’s vote and that is what is going to limit the brother’s possibilities and (Martín) will no longer be able to be campaign manager,” he expressed.

He added that “what must be welcomed is that he has assumed his responsibility. He has been present at the reading of the sentence, he has listened to it until the end, even knowing that the possibilities of convicting him were quite high and he is assuming his responsibility.”

He stated that “the Judiciary has well established within the framework of the sanctions why it imposes a sanction with respect to the Ilo case and why it imposes another sanction in the Moquegua case. There is the possibility that another instance will reduce the sentence or even acquit him, although I see that as very unlikely.”

He considered that “the money route is clearly traced until it reaches Hernández. They are people who have assumed their responsibility and have made a deal with the Prosecutor’s Office, but they are people who have also committed crimes. For the prosecutor it is a great goal to have achieved this conviction in the first instance, which, furthermore, is carried out immediately.”

“There was the possibility that the Judiciary would order that he be sentenced, but with a suspended sentence, but the PJ has read the full text of the sentence so that Mr. Vizcarra can say whether he appeals or not and therefore has ordered that he go with an effective sentence,” he said, emphasizing that the former president will go directly to prison.
