The head of the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, dismissed José Antonio Romero Tellaeche as general director of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE). Lucero Ibarra Rojas was appointed in her place, who served as director of the Legal Studies Division of this center and who, starting today (Tuesday), will occupy the position on an interim basis.
Official sources confirmed to The Day that the appointment of Ibarra Rojas comes into force this Tuesday. However, the reasons for the removal of Romero Tellaeche or the duration of the interim position were not reported.
Information about the dismissal of the doctor in economics began to circulate yesterday on social networks, after the dissemination of a letter from the secretariat signed by Ruiz Gutiérrez, dated January 27, 2026 and addressed to Ibarra Rojas.
For his part, Romero Tellaeche released a document addressed to the governing body in which he points out that, based on the legal framework – both the general statute of the center and the General Law on Humanities, Sciences, Technologies and Innovation –, the designation and separation of the person in charge of the general direction are subject to rules “that exclude any form of separation based on informal decisions, political agreements or expressions of will lacking legal basis.”
In the letter, dated yesterday, Romero Tellaeche indicated that the early removal of the person in charge of the general management can only occur when legal causes expressly provided for are reliably proven, through due process and the right to hearing, and through a resolution adopted in a formal session of the governing body, convened with an agenda and recorded in the corresponding minutes.
He stressed that, as long as any of the assumptions provided for in the law are not updated or the corresponding procedure is carried out, the person in charge of the general management fully retains his legal and statutory powers, as well as the responsibility to continue exercising the position. He reiterated his “full willingness to continue performing the functions conferred on me.”
For its part, the CIDE Academic Staff Union recognized Lucero Ibarra Rojas as interim general director of the institution.
