The country’s political and trade union organizations took advantage of the date to remember that the communicator remains incommunicado and without the right to defense. In addition, they recalled that more than a year ago he was detained for the second time by the government of Nicolás Maduro, the first arrest was in 2020 and, after negotiations, he was released in 2023.
Roland Carreño serves years in prison
Through social networks, the organizations remembered the date and asked for the freedom of the communicator.
“Today, Roland Carreño spends another birthday in prison, without the right to defense and 14 months incommunicado without seeing his family. He has been missing for a month without his whereabouts being known. It is the second time in prison. We hope he will be free soon,” wrote the National College of Journalists (CNP) in the social network.
In this sense, the political party Voluntad Popular dedicated a message on its social networks.
“Today we celebrate the life and bravery of our brother Roland Carreño. On his 60th birthday, he once again has to spend it away from his family, his children and his friends, because for more than a year he has been kidnapped by the Nicolás Maduro regime. We know that, despite everything, Roland remains firm, with hope intact and with the same commitment to a free Venezuela.“, they indicated.
They took advantage of the date to demand that Roland Carreño and all political prisoners in Venezuela be released.
“Today, once again, from Voluntad Popular we unite to demand his immediate release and that of all political prisoners. No cell will be able to silence his voice or break his spirit. Roland represents the courage and dignity of those who continue to fight for truth and freedom,” they highlighted.
They added: “Roland, today we cannot hug you in person, but we accompany you with our hearts. We know that you will soon return home, free, to celebrate not only your birthday, but also the rebirth of the Venezuela for which you have given so much.”
For its part, the NGO Justice, Encounter and Forgivenesshighlighted that Roland Carreño is deprived of his rights.
“Today, Roland Carreño celebrates another year of life in prison. He does so without having had full access to the defense, with fourteen months of incommunicado detention and one month missing without his whereabouts being known. His family has not been able to see him, his lawyers have not been able to carry out their work and the Venezuelan State remains silent,” they said.
In this regard, they pointed out that The case of Roland Carreño has been marked by “arbitrariness and systematic violations of his human rights”. For this reason, they demanded “justice, freedom and truth.”
“Every person has the right to personal freedom, to defense, to a fair trial, to physical and moral integrity, and to contact with their loved ones. No political conviction, no journalistic work, can be a reason to lose these rights. Arbitrary detention and prolonged incommunication not only violate Roland, but also send a message of fear and persecution to society,” they indicated.
