Journalists Roland Carreño and Luis López expressed their joy at the release of political prisoners that were recorded this Wednesday, January 14, after the process announced last week by the authorities.

“The mixed emotions, but well, finally in freedom and waiting for future events that do not have to be other than the encounter, peace, reconciliation,” Carreño said in a video spread on social networks, in which he celebrated with López that he was having his first cup of coffee after spending a year and five months in prison.

The activist of the Popular Will party said that there are still “many people” in prisons, so he hopes they will be gradually released “until there are no prisoners left.”

“It is neither good nor healthy for a country to have political prisoners,” he added.

Carreño and López were detained in the Rodeo I prison (Miranda state). They indicated that the release process began at 05:00 am when they signed their tickets and, later, the director of the facility left them in a shopping center in Guatire, where they were picked up by their relatives.

Both thanked the journalistic union for their efforts and making their cases visible. «To pray for the Venezuela that is now beginning. “We were right, we had to fight for this Venezuela and it cost us,” López said.

The National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) registered this Wednesday the release of 19 journalists held in different prisons in the country. Five others remain behind bars.

Human rights organizations have pointed out that these people are released from prison with precautionary measures such as the prohibition of using social networks, publicly referring to their cases, as well as periodic appearances before the courts.

Delcy Rodríguez said this Wednesday that the process of releasing political prisoners “remains open” and that to date a total of 406 people have been released from prison. He noted that “crimes related to the constitutional order, hatred, violence and intolerance are being assessed.”

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
