The number of bodegones fell to 405 throughout the country in 2022, compared to the 476 that kept their doors open in 2021, said Vice President Delcy Rodríguez at an event that brought together the supermarket sector in Latin America and the Caribbean in Caracas.
Delcy Rodríguez, Executive Vice President of the administration of Nicolás Maduro, participated this Monday, October 24, in the meeting of the Latin American Association of Supermarkets (ALAS) held in Caracas, where she assured that Supermarket activity in Venezuela grew 19% between 2021 and 2022.
He indicated in his presentation that the number of still lifes fell to 405 throughout the country in 2022, compared to the 476 that kept their doors open in 2021. There was also a closure of premises dedicated to the sale of alcoholic beverages (liquor stores), going from 13,429 to 11,415 in the same period. While in supermarkets and hypermarkets there was growth in 2022, reaching 670 stores versus 562 last year.
The so-called still lifes with the sale of imported products that increased between 2018 and 2021 they were perceived as a sign of improvement in the Venezuelan economy. They were also the first businesses to accept payments in cash, which encouraged the dollarization process in the country. However, their high prices and the drop in sales of these establishments have led to a closure of this type of establishment.
Vice President Rodríguez added at the event of AT that so far in 2022 there was an increase of 120% in the formation of national commerce, going from 11,228 businesses throughout the country to 24,748.
He stressed that currently 100% of the raw material is being imported by the Venezuelan private sector. While food production also presents positive data and specifically in bovine meat, sugar, milk, sardines, rice, chicken, pasta, sausages and legumes.
“These are numbers that speak of the country’s capacity for resistance and recovery, this number is important because it speaks of consolidation,” said the Vice President in a state broadcast VTV.
ALAS is made up of 16 countries and associations that represent the supermarket chains of Latin America and the Caribbean. “We as ALAS, made up of 16 countries, are like a bridge with the commercial platform to exchange, according to the needs of the sister countries, with which we have a brilliant opportunity to strengthen all the links in the chain. and so they can participate in the economic reactivation that concerns us all so much, “said Christian Cieplik, president of the union.

The event was also organized by the National Association of Supermarkets and Self-Services (ANSA)whose president Italo Atencio stressed that these types of work sessions are intended to promote business among the affiliates of the organizations, and mainly to Venezuela to support it on its path to recovery.
Similarly, Atencio estimated that by 2023, the national supermarket sector will grow between 6% and 9%, which in turn will generate lower inflation.
Delcy Rodríguez also indicated that the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC) projects a 12% growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Venezuela at the end of 2022, being the second highest growth rate in Latin America and the Caribbean. He recalled that according to preliminary figures from the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV), the economy grew 17.04% in the first quarter of 2022 and 18.70% in the second quarter, which denotes the rebound in productivity after a 75% drop between 2013 and 2021.
“With ECLAC’s projection we would have six consecutive quarters of growth, this is very important, especially in a world economy situation hit hard by the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” he said.
It should also be remembered that the official data from the BCV on the consolidated results of the GDP of the different sectors of the economy are still awaited in the first half of this year, promised last August by the president of the issuing body, Calixto Ortega.
At the end of the Assembly of Associates within the framework of the #Workshop2022 ALAS – ANSA, Ricardo Zorzón, president of the Argentine Chamber of Supermarkets (CAS) and the Argentine Federation of Supermarkets (FASA) was elected as the new president of ALAS.
