“The bet we are making and that is in the Strategic Mobility Plan is to double the bicycle trips that are made in the city and I think we are on the right track,” said the official, who recalled that the goal is that in 2024 510,000 daily trips on two wheels are reached.

In an interview, he pointed out that the aim is to promote the use of bicycles, especially after the decrease in trips after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, while seeking to consolidate the bicycle as part of the public transport system of the city. city.

“With the pandemic, the number of Ecobici trips decreased a lot and it has taken a while to recover. In turn, the number of bicycles has also been reduced since we are going out of operation, since those that are spoiled or have severe damage are no longer replaced because we are precisely in a transition stage, “he explains.

To double the trips, Díaz details that they are taking the improvement and expansion of Ecobici, but also of the cycling network that exists in Mexico City.

“More than half of the bike paths that this city has have been built in the last three years; expand the offer of massive bike parking – we already have 10 working -, and in general make the streets more attractive, safe, friendly places to pedal , they are part of the actions”, he expresses.

The undersecretary maintains that the main objective is to turn the city into a “bike town” and that seeing friends, school or work colleagues and families pedaling, more people dare to use the bicycle as one of their forms of transportation.

“We hope to return to being a bicycle town, Mexico City has all the conditions to be a great cycling capital.”
