Rodolfo Puente Ferro, doctor and member of Ernesto’s guerrilla Che Guevara in the Congo, died this Sunday at the age of 98, according to the official media cubadebate.
Born in Santiago de Cuba on December 2, 1924, Puente Ferro joined the July 26 Movement in his youth, supporting “by sending medicines and caring for the sick” from the Las Tunas Clinic, the official media indicates.
Starting in 1959, he held different positions in the Health sector, including the director of the Finlay Hospital Hematology Institute, but was later “called by the party, occupying different responsibilities with a sense of ethics, commitment and loyalty to Fidel and Raúl without limits”, the obituary glosses.
Puente Ferro was currently honorary president of the Cuba-Africa Friendship Association, the continent where he developed a large part of his career. He participated in the peace negotiations in Angola, where he was ambassador for years. In addition, he was part of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and responsible for relations with political parties and organizations in the area of Africa and the Middle East.
“He is one of the most knowledgeable cadres about the region, a magnificent worker and with impeccable conduct,” the official press has said of him.
