Hernández, 79, had been facing serious health problems in recent months. His condition deteriorated after a complex liver surgery, which led him to remain in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Piedecuesta, Santander.
Despite medical efforts, his health continued to deteriorate, culminating in his death.

Rodolfo Hernández died due to complications from a metastatic neoplastic disease of the colon, according to the International Hospital. Since his diagnosis, Hernández had spoken openly about his illness and how he was coping with the nearness of death.
In an interview with Eva Rey on the show Desnúdate con Eva, he appeared unconcerned, saying that he had already lived 90% of his life.
During that interview, Hernández, when asked how he would like to be remembered, said that he preferred to be cremated. But he also revealed, in a joking tone, when the presenter asked him if he would have a name for his tombstone, to which he replied: “Here lies Rodolfo Hernández, who, chasing work and money, lost his health.” With his characteristic humor, he added: “Here lies Rodolfo Hernández, penniless and unhealthy.”
The final farewell to the “engineer”, as he was popularly known by his profession, took place in Bucaramanga on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 4, during a Mass celebrated in the Cathedral of the Holy Family, in the morning hours.
