“Brazil, as we understand it today, did not exist 100 years ago. A continental country, with diverse cultures, with six biomes, a vast array of different accents, customs and music as well. One generation was responsible for creating this identity, which is the generation of 1920”
The assessment is by filmmaker and musician André Weller. According to him, names like composer Ary Barroso (1903-1964) helped to build the idea of a country that inhabits national common sense. “He created this ‘Brazilian Brazil’, which we are so proud of. We may not know what the ‘inzoneiro mulato’ is [intrigante]but he is ours. We know that.”
André Weller signs the script and direction of the documentary Aryabout the composer of Watercolor from Brazilsamba composed in ten minutes, on a rainy night that trapped Ary Barroso at home.
Stories like this are in André Weller’s feature film and are retold in the program Samba Wheel, produced by Brazil Agency and by National Radio. The third season of the program starts airing this Sunday (26), at noon, and the first episode is about Ary Barroso.
André Weller’s film features dramatization resources, images of Ary and texts by the composer, narrated in the first person by actor Lima Duarte. The feature film premiered this month, at the Rio Film Festival, and is expected to hit the national circuit in 2026.
