The Rockefeller Foundation announced that it will open a new Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) for the first time in two decades. As part of their global commitment, they will invest more than US$1 billion in five years to advance the global climate transition and ensure that everyone can participate in it.

According to the Foundation Joint work will be done with regional leaders and local stakeholders to help achieve measurable results for people in the region and the planet. The philanthropy plans to base its regional presence in Colombia in 2025 and appoint a new vice president to build it.
The announcement was made during the event ‘People, nature and climate in Latin America and the Caribbean’ in Bogotá, Colombia, which the Rockefeller Foundation organized jointly with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Colombia and the Compaz Foundation.

With more than a century of investment in the region, The Rockefeller Foundation established its first office in Latin America and the Caribbean in the late 1930s.focusing on improving the health and agriculture sectors, developing rural communities and establishing universities.
Although its physical presence in the region ended in the early 2000sthe Foundation’s investments have continued, with ongoing projects in ten countries in the region: Barbados, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Trinidad and Tobago.

The event will take place today and will emphasize the need to foster economies focused on positive solutions for nature and climate, empowering communities to responsibly manage natural resources.

With 669 million inhabitants in 33 countries, ALatin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has 50% of the world’s biodiversity and key transition minerals such as lithiumcopper and cobalt, positioning it to play a crucial role in the global green transition.
In addition, over the next two years, A strategic political opportunity will present itself with several major global climate events scheduled in the region: the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), from 21 October to 1 November in Colombia; the G20, from 18 to 19 November in Brazil; and the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), which also returns to the region for the fifth time in 30 years, when Brazil hosts the international climate meeting in November 2025.

The event, which will be attended by several beneficiaries of the Rockefeller Foundation, will feature speeches by former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Juan Manuel Santos, the mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Galánthe mayor of Cali, Álvaro Alejandro Eder Garcés, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia, Susana Muhamad, the president of CAF, Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, Sergio Díaz-Granados, the former secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Christiana Figueres, and other leaders.
