The services sector increased by 1% in September and once again reached the highest level in the historical series, which began in 2012, after the 0.3% drop in August. With September’s result, the volume of services is at a level 0.6% above the previous record (July this year).
Rock in Rio, an international music festival held in September, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, was one of the factors that contributed to the increase in services in the country in the month. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the “other services provided to families” segment, which includes shows and cultural events, rose 16.5% due to the festival.
“Rock in Rio is among the main positive impacts to explain this 1% growth in the services sector in September”, explains IBGE researcher Rodrigo Lobo.
In addition to the direct impact of the festival, measured in the “other services provided to families” segment, there are also indirect effects in other sectors. “We always have spillover effects, in air transport, in accommodation, in restaurants. But in the Monthly Services Survey, we cannot capture it because it is a sample survey and we cannot capture it with precision to have a number that reflects the full extent of the impact of a festival of these proportions”.
According to Rodrigo Lobo, other important impacts came from the engineering services, information technology services and pipeline transport segments.
