Perú21 learned that the magistrate has already approached his colleagues to present his work plan for the four-year term of the administration.
In November, the Plenary Chamber of the Supreme Court will elect the head of the JNE, whose main function will be to organize the 2026 general elections.
According to the sources consulted, no other supreme leader has the intention of seeking that position.
The successor
Roberto Burneo from Piura, graduated from the University of Piura, only began his judicial career in 2022, at the age of 47, when the National Board of Justice (JNJ) elected him supreme judge.
In his personal interview he said that he had extensive experience as an independent lawyer, but acknowledged having minimal experience litigating in court. He achieved a grade of 92.82, after the JNJ gave him additional points for being a person with a disability.
Before, the closest he had been to dispensing justice was being a member of the ONP’s Social Security Administrative Tribunal, in 2020.
He was also legal advisor at the Ministry of Production between 2014 and 2016; head of the Legal Advisory Office and legal consultant at Indeci.
Currently, he presides over the Second Supreme Chamber of Constitutional and Social Law.
