Roberto Álvarez asks the UN to face the crisis in Haiti

Once again, the Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic, Roberto Alvarezhas cried before him United Nations Security Council about the situation of Haiti that a multinational force is needed to deal with the criminal gangs in order to restore peace to that nation.

In a message lasting several minutes, Álvarez cited that the gangs, supported by the Haitian political and military sectorsnot only threaten peace of mind, but also hinder the fight against hunger and anger, disease that has killed more than two thousand people since it started this outbreak.

“How can food be distributed to around five million people at risk of acute food insecurity in 2023, including some two million children and adolescents, of whom approximately 250,000 suffer from acute malnutrition?” Chancellor in front of UN colleagues.

In this sense, on behalf of the Dominican Government, the foreign minister requested the international intervention to normalize the bands in the neighboring country.

He listed the efforts that the Dominican Republic has made in favor of the Haitian people: channeling the supply of fuel to hospitals and other entities; security support for the transport of diplomatic personnel and free health care, citing that the 32.4% of deliveries in hospitals are Haitian.

However, he reiterated that the Dominican Republic cannot bear the crisis of Haitibut must come out of the Haitian leadership, but with international help.

“We know and we insist that the solution to the Haitian crisis will emerge only from the Haitian people and their leaders, through a tenacious dialogue and a lasting political agreement, but today they cannot achieve it alone; as the highest authorities have repeatedly expressed. Haitian authorities”Roberto AlvarezDominican Foreign Minister

He said that the Haitian government and police are making an effort to restore peace, but international help is needed.

The Dominican official adhered to the opinion of Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nationswho quoted: “While aid for the training of its police is consolidated, a robust force is necessary, capable of restoring peace and putting an end to the violence unleashed by armed gangs, infiltrated by political and economic power.”

Álvarez hopes that by January 2023 the sanctions against the gangs will begin “in order to have a greater scope in the prosecution of criminals,” because in his opinion, “The threshold of good intentions has already been crossed.”
