The Cuban boxer Robeisy Ramírez defeated this Saturday by unanimous vote in 12 rounds the Ghanaian nationalized British Isaac Dogboe and claimed the World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight crown, which had been vacated by the Mexican Emmanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete since last february.
With a solid display of skills, great precision in hitting and perfect management of the three distances, the man from Cienfuegos achieved categorical support in the judges’ ballots, who saw him win with votes of 117-110, 118-109 and 119- 108 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“My respects to Isaac, he is a great fighter. I followed the strategy of (Ismael) Salas and here is the result, ”Robeisy specified after the fight, which he led early with two left punches to Dogboe’s face in the second round.
That combination broke the roadmap for the African, who was somewhat more cautious, although he always carried the lion’s share in terms of attack volume. According to report on ESPN, Dogboe threw much more than Robeisy (619 hits to 495), but his effectiveness was only 18%, well below the 32% achieved by the Cuban.
Despite the clarity of the statistics, the Ghanaian was not pleased with the verdict. “The knockdown in the last round was a slip. He shouldn’t have counted. And those cards were crap,” Dogboe said, visibly disappointed by the result, before calling for a rematch.
For Ramírez, 29, this is the first major crowning of his professional career, which did not start in the best way. In August 2019, the man from Cienfuegos lost to the American Adan González in his debut after leaving Cuba, but since then he has linked a dozen consecutive victories.
“If it hadn’t been for that loss, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would never have joined Ismael Salas. Yordenis Ugas would never have told me to move to Las Vegas and change my life. I would never have gotten this team to where I am today,” Robeisy said in statements collected by El Nuevo Herald.
After winning two Olympic titles (London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016) as an amateur, Robeisy has 12 victories –7 of them by knockouts– and only one failure in his professional career. “I am living a new stage of my life. This is a new story in professionalism. I already did what I had to do as an amateur, two Olympic titles, and now I am a professional world champion. express to ESPN.
“I’m going to enjoy this. I dedicate it to all my people from Cuba, from Miami and to the freedom of Cuba”, exclaimed the Cuban, who wants to clash against the main rivals of the 126-pound division.
After winning the WBO crown, Robeisy Ramírez should be taken into account for future high-caliber commitments, especially against the Mexican champions Luis Alberto López (International Boxing Federation), Mauricio Lara (World Boxing Association) and Rey Vargas. (World Boxing Council).
