An attempted robbery in the early hours of today (2) left a bank branch destroyed and another damaged in Taquara, in the west of Rio de Janeiro. According to the Military Police, police officers from the 18th battalion (BPM – Jacarepaguá) who were patrolling the region heard gunshots and went to the scene, in Praça Jauru.
“When accessing the Estrada do Tindiba, the teams of the 18th BPM came across cars trying to block the road and individuals who fired firearms at the police, with a reaction,” the PM reported.
According to the Military Police, R$ 450 in cash and a perforating object in the shape of a twisted cross were located and seized, but there were no arrests. The expertise was called and the incident was forwarded to the Federal Police Station.
The Federal Police informed that it was called and directed the technical expertise to the place, in addition to the bomb squad and the Special Resources Coordination (Core) of the Civil Police.
There is no confirmation of an explosion by official bodies, but photographs published by the press show the Caixa Econômica Federal branch destroyed, with shattered glass doors and walls and a fallen ceiling. The Santander branch appears only with broken glass.
According to Caixa, information on “criminal events in its units is passed on exclusively to the police authorities” and the bank “cooperates fully with the investigations of Organs competent bodies”.
“The bank awaits the release of the expertise by the security bodies, which are already in the locality, to evaluate the reopening period of the Praça Jauru Agency (RJ)”, informed Caixa.
Santander confirmed the attempted theft at the Praça Jauru branch and said that the bank is collaborating with the police investigations.
