Crime in Nicaragua continues to increase. In videos shared by the Nicaraguan population through social networks, two episodes went viral: a robbery and another frustrated robbery attempt perpetrated by unknown individuals in Managua and Matagalpa, respectively.

The most recent case occurred on October 10, in the Oswaldo Manzanares neighborhood, in Managua, where two individuals of unknown identity entered a grocery store and managed to steal a bucket and a backpack loaded with merchandise.

The victims of the robbery and residents of that capital neighborhood, according to official media, identified the alleged perpetrators as “Angelo” and “Herling”, describing them as the “scourges of the area”, who despite the fact that “they have been arrested, they always come out in prison.” freedom”.

In Matagalpa, on October 2, a subject of unknown identity was also recorded trying to break into a home in the La Virgen neighborhood.

In the video, the subject can be seen manipulating the locks on the main gate of the house, in addition to looking out of the windows of the property on several occasions to make sure that no one was in the place.

A political analyst, consulted by Article 66under condition of anonymity, recently reported that these types of situations, which reflect an increase in common crimes; “It has an impact in several directions: on people’s quality of life, it increases risk levels and probabilities of victimization, and it also increases the perception of risk among the population.”

He explained that “to the extent that the State uses violence, especially political violence, it contributes to reinforcing other forms of violence. This can be seen, for example, in the case of violence against women with the increase in femicides, but also with the levels of viciousness with which they are committed. Another element is that it encourages impunity among aggressors,” he noted.

Criminal recidivism of those pardoned

Furthermore, he assessed that the massive releases of common prisoners, which the Ortega regime takes out of prisons without them serving their respective sentences for crimes they committed, are also part of the factors that increase the levels of insecurity in the country, highlighting that “many “Some of them go out to reoffend, they cause distrust and fear among the people.”

So far in 2024, according to independent media counts, the Ortega dictatorship has released, via pardons and a regime of family coexistence, more than 6,000 prisoners who have committed different crimes, including robberies and others linked to violence against women. women.

The directors of the National Penitentiary System (SPN), in official media, revealed that the percentage of criminal recidivism of people who benefit from one of these family coexistence or pardon regimes is eight percent in Nicaragua. That is to say, 8 out of every 100 released commit crimes again and return to the different prisons in the country.
