RJ: campaign starts today to donate blood in off-season carnival

The Institute of Hematology of Rio (Hemorio) launched this Friday (15) the second stage of the campaign Você Faz Meu Tipo, with the objective of attracting blood donors during the off-season carnival that will be from 20 to 24 of this month in capital of Rio de Janeiro. In the first edition, which took place between the end of February and the beginning of March, around two thousand donors were mobilized.RJ: campaign starts today to donate blood in off-season carnival

According to the Ministry of Health, during the carnival period, there is a drop of up to 20% in stocks available for transfusions. In addition, the demand for blood bags increases due to the greater number of accidents in the city during the festivities.

According to the parameters of the World Health Organization (WHO), in order to maintain regular stocks, 1.5% to 3% of the population must donate regularly. Brazil currently has 1.8% of donors. An average of 3.5 million blood bags are collected every year across the country.

Only in January of this year, due to the covid-19 pandemic, the flu epidemic and heavy rains, Hemorio recorded a drop of more than a thousand bags of blood compared to the same period in 2021. According to Hemorio, the donation is fundamental to support the main emergencies, maternity hospitals and health units in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

“This is a difficult period for Hemorio, as we are facing two consecutive weeks of holidays: Easter and Carnival. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that stocks are stocked to support those in need and allow us to celebrate these dates in a peaceful way. Be sure to come here these days, we really need you”, said the general director of Hemorio, Luiz Amorim.

The attendance at Hemorio will not be changed on Carnival days. The blood center will maintain its operation from Monday to Monday, including holidays, from 7 am to 6 pm.
