Rivers affected by pollution

Moca River covered by garbage and plastic material.

Santiago. Most water sources in the Cibao continue to be subject to processes of disappearance, with a large part of the rivers polluted by garbage or material extraction.

The rivers Moca, in the Espaillat province, and Camú, in La Vega, are two examples of lack of authority on the part of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, despite the constant complaints made by environmental organizations in these demarcations.

As it passes through various points in Moca, the river that bears the same name is subjected to a degradation process, with improvised garbage dumps, which are either placed on its banks or thrown into the already polluted waters.

In the area of the bridge that divides the Las Colinas neighborhood, where the municipal landfill still operates with the municipal district of Monte de la Jagua, the aquifer source is affected by the actions of unscrupulous people.

Camú affected extraction

Recently, the president of the Foundation for the Environment, Life and Health, Andino José Marte, denounced the extraction of materials from the Camú River, in the municipal district of La Bija, in the Sánchez Ramírez province. That same action is recurrent as it passes through La Vega where the water source is born.

The Yuna River is also affected by the extraction of materials, despite its importance in supplying water to agricultural producers in the area.

While the Licey River, which runs through the northern mountain range in the Boca de Licey community in the municipality of Tamboril, runs through Licey al Medio and joins the Puñal River, which in turn flows into the Moca River, it is exposed to the contamination of those who are dedicated to raising chickens, pigs and chickens. Despite the complaints, Environment has never intervened.

Streams and ravines also affected

Last year, popular groups from Licey al Medio denounced the intentions of General Julio Camilo de los Santos Viola, imprisoned for the Coral 5G case, to affect the course of the Licey River on land acquired for animal husbandry. Also the majority of ravines and streams in the municipality of Santiago de los Caballeros are exposed to pollution.
