Rivera: Heber sends more police to the north of the country to fight drug trafficking

The Ministry of the Interior decided this Tuesday to send more police from the Republican Guard in the north of the countryin addition to reinforcing patrols with an air unit (plane or helicopter) due to the growth of violence in the department caused by drug gangs.

A batch of 72 troops leaves this Wednesday and several will settle in Salto and Rivera, sources from the ministry told The Observer.

This was resolved by the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, this Tuesday after bringing together several authorities to analyze the situation of violence in Rivera and establish a line of work.

The Ministry of the Interior indicated that it works constantly with the Brazilian police to combat crime.

The measure follows the viralization of videos by two criminal gangs from the Uruguay-Brazil border in which death threats are exchanged. The material is investigated by the Ministry of the Interior.

The meeting was attended by the secretary general of the portfolio, Luis Calabria; the director of Coexistence, Santiago González; the director of the Police, Diego Fernández; Rivera Police Chief Wilfredo Rodríguez; in addition to authorities from the Police Aviation Directorate, and the Republican Guard.
