The Rio State Department of Health reported this Monday (14) that two cases of the new XEC lineage of the Covid-19 Sars-CoV-2 virus had been detected. Both live in the capital of Rio de Janeiro and have not traveled outside the country recently. The cases were detected through routine monitoring by the SES-RJ Center for Strategic Information and Health Surveillance, which randomly selects samples for genetic testing.
The first patient is a 45-year-old man who began showing symptoms on September 9th. The second is a 61-year-old woman who first had signs on September 11th. Both recovered from the disease after mild symptoms, similar to those of a cold.
At the Health Intelligence Center (CIS), the secretariat monitors early indicatorssuch as the incidence of flu-like symptoms and requests for beds in state Emergency Care Units (UPAs). Observing these indices allows us to anticipate the variation in the number of cases.
