The Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ) inaugurated today (5th) the 2nd and 3rd Specialized Courts in Criminal Organizations, to judge the crimes provided for in the Criminal Organization Law, Asset Laundering Law and article 288-A , about militias.
The goal is to speed up the prosecution of militia, money laundering and corruption crimes, in addition to preventing judges from forums and districts in general from being threatened by criminal groups, centralizing the analysis and judgment of these crimes in the capital.
The president of the TJRJ, judge Henrique Carlos de Andrade Figueira, explained that, with the new courts, state justice will have nine magistrates to take care of the cases, all gathered in a single registry office, streamlining the process.
“Justice is attentive to social demands. We will have a bigger and better structure, with top judges, and we will be very efficient in our duty. This is a very important step for us to face criminal organizations, which are undermining our social base. It is a substantial advance, the result of spectacular and productive work by the 1st Specialized Court”, explained Figueira.
To speed up the processes, the Criminal Processing Center (CPC) was also created, with its own structure to serve the three courts, and the Nucleus for Analysis of Technical Evidence (Napt), which has a specialized body for special services.

The 1st Court Specialized in Criminal Organizations of the TJRJ was opened three years ago, with the name of 1st Specialized Criminal Court of the Capital. Resolution OE 20/2022, published on June 21, which created the two new specialized courts, also renamed the first.
According to the TJRJ, the 1st Specialized Court currently has a collection of approximately 1,000 cases, 225 of which are confidential. About two hundred lawsuits are distributed per month, with an average of 50 thousand sheets per case, a hundred accused and investigated and more than 60 lawyers involved in each one. The service carries out around 30 hearings per month and the notary extracts more than three thousand diligences.
The new courts were created with the conversion of other units, taking advantage of the positions of Judge of Law and other employees of the Service. The 2nd Specialized Court in Criminal Organization came from the transformation of the XII Special Court of the Public Treasury of the District of Nova Friburgo and the 3rd originates from the X Special Court of the Public Treasury of the District of Vassouras.
The courts are exclusively responsible for prosecuting and prosecuting the crimes of criminal organizations; paramilitary organization, private militia, criminal group or squad; and laundering or concealing assets, rights and values. The specialized courts will work with new police investigations, not receiving those that have already been distributed to other criminal courts.
