The most widely used urban mobility application in the world, Moovit, launched this year the global report on public transportation of 2024. The document combines the information with research conducted with 76,000 users to illustrate urban mobility trends.
Among all the cities analyzed in the report, Rio de Janeiro was among the ten with the highest average travel time, with 58 minutes. In the survey, Moovit users were asked what would make them use the most public transportation. For 36%, more vehicles is key, 23% ask for reliable times and 14% want cheaper tickets.
According to the document, ten Brazilian metropolitan regions are part of the report: Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Campinas, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Sao Paulo. The survey was conducted in November 2024 and all data is anonymous.
The transport card is the favorite way of paying most Brazilians: 71%. 15% of Curitibanos prefer to pay with debit or credit card. For 14% of passengers from Recife and Porto Alegre, money is the preferential form of payment, the highest rate in the country.
Moovit’s vice president of product, Ziv Kabaretti, said that “as cities continue to develop, understanding the daily experiences of public transport passengers is crucial to improving the future of mobility,” the executive said, “O MOOVIT 2024 global public transport report not only highlights the challenges that still exist, but shows the positive advances that are being made around the world to make travel more convenient, efficient and accessible, ”he noted.
Expansion
The Rio Municipal Secretariat of Transport said, in a statement, that it should be remembered that over the years the city has expanded out of its central axis, where most employment opportunities are concentrated. He cited the implementation of public policies to promote the reoccupation of the central region, as well as the recovery of the entire modal of transport. The situation was aggravated by the consequent decline of the Center, because of the economic crisis experienced by the country from 2014, ”said the secretary.
Among these policies recalled the revitalization of the region, such as changes in the Master Plan, Reviver Centro and Reviver Cultural, as well as enable buildings such as Porto Maravalley, the Intermodal Integration Terminal Gentleness and the transformation of Leopoldina Station in a place with houses of Minha House, My Life, Family Clinic and the City of Samba 2.
The Transbrasil Corridor was inaugurated with two integration, Deodoro and Kindness terminals, which make up buses, train and VLT. Only transbrasil’s entry into operation allowed an average reduction of 50 minutes or 32% of the total travel time for those who were traveling between Campo Grande and Candelária.
Displacement
In the public transport system by bus, there was also advancement to improve the displacement of the population. Since June 2022, 194 bus lines have resumed or created in the city (increasing more than 70%) and more than 800 bus stops have been reactivated. The number of kilometers traveled per business day doubled from 677,000 to about 1.2 million kilometers per day.
These measures improved integration between regions of the city and reduced passenger displacement time. The BRT, which carried about 150,000 people in 2021, today serves more than 500,000 people.
